bigstock-Balance-Spheres-Shows-Balanced-51984634a We’re heading into our busiest time of year, the holiday season, and yet, don’t you find that it’s busy all year long?!  As the commercials recently are saying, Is that good busy? Or not so good busy?  I’ve noticed some interesting things we do and say that are completely counter to what we truly want…something I call the ‘busy syndrome’. “Hi, how are you?” “Oh, I’m SO busy!” <smile>  (as if that’s a good thing) Sometimes it is a good thing, and, often it’s not.  What are your life balance goals?  What are your work or business goals?  Do they include being busy every waking hour? Is it your desire to be booked up with work, volunteer, and family commitments every day and most evenings? Who wants that? Yet, most of you have built your lives this way.  Why? Here are the Top 3 Reasons Why We Stay Busy:

  1. Slowing down requires reflection and intention, and that’s uncomfortable for many people. When we slow down, we are better able to choose our next step, rather than react in a frenzy.
  2. The pace of life is quickening. Technology allows us to be online and accessible 24/7/365. We are consuming enormous amounts of information in every moment and multi-tasking is the new normal.
  3. Being busy is a badge of honour. Industriousness and productivity are prized, and leisure and relaxation are shunned.  If you take a lot of time off or lead a slower-paced life, you can be seen as lazy by today’s standards.  Have you noticed the little hit you get, call it pride, when you say how busy you are?  Pay attention next time you say it and you may be surprised.

If you’re happy with the busy-ness of your life then hats off to you and congratulations! If you’re not, here are 3 things you can do right now.

  1. Redefine success for yourself and let go of beliefs that buy in to industrial civilization’s mantra, More is Better! Clearly define balance and success for you personally with respect to how much time you will be booked with commitments on your calendar, or in other words, how much time you will be busy.  Only you will know what’s right for you.
  2. Assess everything that you’re involved in against your personal goals and core values and intentionally decide, with each one, whether to continue doing it, or simply say “No”.  Let go of the “should”, ignore what other people expect you to do, and choose how you spend your time, from your heart and your core.
  3. Schedule your personal down time, either alone or with loved ones and friends, for at least 1 hour every day and turn off all communication devices.  Unplug yourself intentionally for at least 1 hour a day.  Use this time for quiet reflection or deep connection with others.
